My kids make fun of us for having grown up in the Dark Ages where we, yes, actually had to go to the library and read books to do research. But I also think that kids lose so much not having to do this today and, as you say, thank heavens that at least video chatting is slowly replacing text messages.

My dad helped send man to the moon and I am sorry he didn't live long enough to see computers, internet and e-mail and now cell phones and live chat.Jamiehttp://lifesafeast.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22910471.post-27691764223212742172010-01-16T13:34:11.369+01:002010-01-16T13:34:11.369+01:00Aparna - I totally agree! you might be interested ...Aparna - I totally agree! you might be interested to know that in France there is a small but growing campaign to get kids to play the games we used to play when we were little: marbles, hopscotch, jump-rope etc... Our kids very much love to be outdoors and play games and I'm going to be very strict about the little one's "tech" time, otherwise they get used to the only exercise they get being with their fingers as you said.Hildahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13631513706872641622noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22910471.post-34441482031901324582010-01-15T11:06:41.406+01:002010-01-15T11:06:41.406+01:00When I was kid, a mouse was an animal that squeak...When I was kid, a mouse was an animal that squeaked but to my daughter its an integral part of her life!

As much as technology has made life so much easier, I'm not really happy with how important kids seem to think it is in their lives.

We used to have so much fun playing when we were kids. It meant physical exercise and learning to socialise and adjust with other children.
Now the only excercise most kids get is for their fingers from operating buttons on gizmos!

I'm beginning to see kids having more behaviour related problems, thanks to all this.

Very thought provoking write-up, Hilda.Aparna Balasubramanianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02989967318453941084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22910471.post-84366906041796615692010-01-15T03:01:33.741+01:002010-01-15T03:01:33.741+01:00Technology is really fast evolving! I find this as an advantage for the kids since they have the capacity to learn at a very early age with the help of technology.cedar hope chesthttp://www.erikorganic.com/bedroom/cedar-chest.shtmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22910471.post-88843699243742249222010-01-14T08:33:41.812+01:002010-01-14T08:33:41.812+01:00A brilliant article Hilda! When my granddad was alive I used to marvel at his stories and today when I try to communicate those stories to my son (7) he looks at me as if I am talking of a make believe world.

Your comparison of the text message and video chat is very much felt at home too - while I often resort to chatting via google with my friends, it's self-evident to soeren that skype and video-chatting with family members is the only way to go!Meeta K.
